Frequently Asked Question
NOTE: Microsoft is phasing out this "legacy authentication" method.
These instructions will not work once legacy authentication is disabled.
If your app supports it, please consider switching to OAuth authentication. Every app does this differently so we cannot provide instructions. Check with your app's developer or documentation for more information.
We must approve the use of any OAuth apps before your sign-in will complete.
Don’t want to use the Outlook app to add your Lincoln email to your phone?
It is also possible to add your Outlook 365 email to the built-in email app on your phone. However, be warned that each device and app functions differently. First you will need to access the app settings or account list in the app and create a new account. The steps that follow vary depending on your device and what kinds of accounts the app supports. Below you can find instructions for iPhones and Android devices.
If you would rather use the Outlook App to get email on your phone, follow the instructions we've provided here.
iPhone
If you are using iOS 10, it is incredibly simple to add your email, calendar, notes, and other Outlook content to your device.
- In the Settings app, navigate to Accounts & Passwords.
- Tap Add Account
- Tap Exchange
- Enter your email address (e.g. john.smith123@my.lincolnu.edu), and optionally name the account
- Tap Sign In. The Microsoft sign in page will open.
- Enter your password.
- Choose what to sync.
You’re done. Your mail account should show up in the Mail app.
If you are using iOS 9, it is a bit more difficult to get things working, because iOS 9 does not natively support Office 365.
- In the Settings app, navigate to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Tap Add Account
- Tap Exchange, and fill out these fields:
- Email: your full email address (e.g. john.smith123@my.lincolnu.edu)
- Server: outlook.office365.com
- Domain: leave blank
- User Name: your email address again
- Password: your Lincoln account password
- Tap Done, and choose what to sync.
Android
Unfortunately, the built-in mail apps for Android vary greatly. These instructions should cover most of them, but there is no guarantee they will work.
- If the app supports “Office 365”, “Outlook”, or “Exchange” as the account type:
- The Office 365 account type should bring up a screen that looks like the one you fill out to sign in to your webmail. Sign in using your email address (e.g. john.smith123@my.lincolnu.edu) and password.
- The Outlook account type may not support Office 365. If signing in with your email and password does not work, try the Exchange type. If the Exchange type does not work with the information below, the app may not be able to support Office 365.
- To use the Exchange account type:
- Server: outlook.office365.com
- Email: your full email address (e.g. john.smith123@my.lincolnu.edu)
- User Name: your email address again
- Domain: leave blank
- If it doesn’t work or requires a domain, try using LU
- If the app supports IMAP or POP3 (may appear as “manual configuration”):
- IMAP/POP3 server: outlook.office365.com
- IMAP port: 993
- POP3 port: 995
- Encryption: SSL/TLS
- SMTP server: smtp.office365.com
- SMTP port: 587
- SMTP encryption: STARTTLS
- If you can’t get the account added but you believe the app supports it, ITS may be able to help you. Otherwise, please download the Outlook app instead, as it is more likely to work, and officially supported.
